State Artist Marc Burckhardt
Marc Burckhardt is the 2010 Texas State Visual Artist in 2-D work. Born in Germany and raised in Texas, Marc Burckhardt’s work juxtaposes old world styles and symbols with contemporary American themes. As a youth, he spent summers in Europe with his family, a tradition he continues today. The paintings, architecture, and perspectives he encounters there combine with his studies of art history to inform his work, which utilizes old masters' techniques to achieve the texture and luminosity that distinguish his paintings. Marc lives and works in a 1910 farmhouse in the shadow of downtown Austin Texas.
Vickie McMillan, a native Texan, is considered a world-renowned wildlife conservation artist in her field of painting. Vickie conducts collaborative community paintings and murals for installation in public buildings, hospitals, schools, correctional facilities, and other government organizations, and in treatment centers, foster-care, health and human service centers. Vickie delivers specialized workshops, residencies, lectures, live performance painting, team-building, staff development, and judging. Her collaborative paintings/murals integrate TEKS curriculum goals for schools, fosters unity in community, advances global conservation causes, and encourages the use of recycled materials when possible. Projects are envisioned and executed by Vickie or with engagement of the organization and participants. Vickie specializes in large-scale collaborative paintings and murals. Each will be designed/conceptualized in advance with set project goals, or designed under Vickie's guidance during workshops. She teaches and demonstrates technique, use of materials, research, team-building, cooperation, creative learning through educationally relevant objects, life skills, and pride. The project would be executed during designated workshops with participants. Murals can be based on the curriculum (including topics such as science, technology, engineering, math, the earth, life cycles, rain forests, geography, and history) or other interests. Students are engaged in the project from concept (brainstorming/themes) to installation and unveiling. A teaching curriculum is available.
