Lannaya West African Drum & Dance Ensemble
Austin-based Lannaya West African Drum & Dance Ensemble is a 13-member troupe of talented drummers and dancers, all trained in traditional drum/dance from West Africa to the Caribbean. Multicultural and dynamic, Lannaya performs intricate and intoxicating dances to rhythms of the African Diaspora. Live drumming drives gesture, music, audience participation, history, and folkore to encourage audiences to move! Lannaya has performed at Austin’s Paramount Theatre, One World Theatre, and the Levitt Pavilion for the Arts in Arlington, as well as many outdoor festivals, including Austin City Limits, First Night, Austin New Year, F1-FanFest, Violet Crown Festival, and the Waco Cultural Arts Fest. "The Rhythm of West Africa" features performance on traditional West African drums, vibrantly costumed dancers, a brief history of instruments, and call/response songs in SuSu (a Guinea language). The program can be tailored per presenter, and complements TEKS standards by introducing music vocabulary, authentic instruments, and dance. Mini-ensemble performances feature selected repertoire. Suitable for small/large audiences and diverse facilities. Lannaya also offers interactive instructional workshops in dance and drum technique incorporated in classroom, family, and other group activities.
