As Associate Director of Development at Houston Grand Opera, you will join an energetic, high-performing Development team, passionate about securing the future of opera through the generosity of our donors. This position will supervise and lead a team of two Development Officers responsible for the screening and acquisition of subscribers and entry-level donors to join HGO’s Patrons Circle ($5,000 and up), and will directly report to the Director of Development.

The Associate Director of Development will also be responsible for a portfolio of approximately 75 Patrons and Trustee-level donors ($10,000 and up), with the objective of increasing their annual support. This position will work closely alongside current HGO Patrons and Trustees, leveraging their involvement as needed to continually grow our base of support.

This position requires a strong leader and team-builder – personable, energetic, motivated, hard-working, disciplined, and empathetic. Candidates must possess excellent strategic and project management skills, be comfortable soliciting for money, masterful in building personal relationships, results-driven, and highly organized.

• Supervise, train, and manage a team of two Development Officers in their work to screen HGO subscribers for the potential acquisition of new Patron-level donors
• Design and implement HGO’s donor acquisition strategy for Development Officers on the acquisitions team to execute
• Cultivate, solicit, and steward an assigned portfolio of 75 Patrons and Trustee-level donors, strategically upgrading their support whenever possible
• Maintain detailed and up-to-date records of all donor activity through Tessitura, HGO’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM), using Plans and Donor Information Sheets
• Assist the Development team in staffing special events and performances, as required

Candidates must have a proven track record of developing and implementing strategies for the acquisition of new donors, and experience leading and training a fundraising team. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with at least five years of non-profit fundraising experience required, two years of which were in a supervisory capacity. Proven success in face-to-face solicitations, donor qualification, and relationship building. Knowledge of principles of fund raising and sales techniques. Experience with Microsoft Office and relevant fundraising software, preferably Tessitura.

This position requires excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, including excellent listening skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Evening and weekend work hours required. Enthusiastic belief in the mission of Houston Grand Opera. While a specific knowledge of opera is desired, active curiosity and an eagerness to learn about this magical art form can be substituted.
