EnPleinAirTEXAS (an event of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts)
The 4th Annual EnPleinAirTEXAS calls artists to apply to be one of 34 selected to paint in this international Plein Air painting competition held October 22-29, 2017.
Applications are accepted online at www.enpleinairTEXAS.com and must include three jpegs of paintings done ‘en plein air’ (the French term for painting out in the open air). The deadline is May 1st. Kenn Backhaus, past-president and Signature Member of Plein Air Painters of America, will jury the applications and select 30 artists to join last year’s top four winners to compete in the 2017 event.
The fourth annual event hosted by the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts (SAMFA) is already considered to be one of the top ‘Plein Air’ competitions in the country. Proceeds support SAMFA’s free education activities for over 28,000 student participants in an 18 county area of West Texas.
Accepted Competition Artists spend the week painting in the San Angelo area, and on private ranches. Artists interact daily with interested onlookers while painting, at special community events, and during free talks and demonstrations in area schools and public venues.
All paintings produced during the event are exhibited and for sale October 27-29 at historic Fort Concho, with a ticketed awards party, ‘The STAMPEDE’ that Friday evening. $16,000 in cash prizes will be presented by Awards Judge Roger Dale Brown of Tennessee, a Signature Member Oil Painters of America.
In the 1920’s, the distinctive emerald green Concho river south of San Angelo attracted artists from 22 states to paint ‘en plein air’ (French for ‘out in the open air’) at the Texas Artist Camp, which became one of the leading institutions of its kind in the Southwest. These men and women were taught by a regionally & nationally recognized faculty, including Jose’ Arpa, Frank Reagh, Adele Brunet, and Xavier Gonzales.
EnPleinAirTEXAS rekindles that original spirit with a week-long juried competition that has been called ‘meteoric’ – attracting participants with national reputations for winning top awards at every major plein air competition in the country.
