The primary responsibility of the Development Officer is to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward institutional donors. With the goal of strengthening corporate, foundation, and government support, this position will manage a portfolio; brainstorm and execute special fundraising projects to generate new institutional donors and expand current partnerships; and assist the Director in overall strategy and management of the department’s efforts.

• Manage the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of a portfolio of institutional donors. Meet with donors face-to-face regularly. Work with Director to create upgrade plans for current donors and acquisition plans for prospects. Act as secondary contact for donors in Director’s portfolio.
• Take the lead on corporate prospecting efforts and manage the activity of HGO’s Corporate Council, a set of HGO Trustees and Board members representing HGO’s corporate partners. Maintain a list of priority corporate prospects and strategize on garnering key introductions.
• Generate ideas for and execute special fundraising projects that focus on institutional giving. Examples include brainstorming new corporate naming opportunities; developing mini-fundraising campaigns for special projects; teaming up with Individual Giving to solicit corporate Trustees for personal support; working with Marketing to leverage HGO’s social media to promote corporate partnerships; etc.
• Work closely with Information Manager to streamline recognition, stewardship, and benefits fulfillment for corporate supporters.
• Work closely with Communications Manager to request written materials and support from Marketing and Communications.
• Staff events for corporate partners and assist with other development events as needed.

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent work experience. Minimum of three years of experience in development, sales, sponsorship, research, or a related field, preferably in non-profit organizations. Proven success in face-to-face solicitation/sales and management of a large portfolio of clients/donors at the $25,000+ level. Experience in customer service, including responsibility for benefits fulfillment for clients/donors. Experience with start-to-finish management of complex projects involving multiple colleagues/teams. Knowledge of principles of fundraising. Excellent verbal communication, writing, editing, and research skills; proposal/grant writing experience preferred. Ability to prioritize projects and stay organized during busy workdays.

The applicant must possess strong interpersonal skills and a persuasive communication style, as well as the ability to be strategic, creative, and flexible. Must be able to generate concise written material for use in proposals; final candidates will generate a writing sample. Proven ability to work under pressure, meet aggressive deadlines, deal with unexpected changes, and work as a team player. Knowledge of opera is a plus, but passion for the arts is essential. Some evening and weekend work required.
