<p>Stanford Live’s principal venue is Stanford’s beautiful new Bing Concert Hall, a state-of-the-art, intimate hall containing 842 seats in a “vineyard” format (seating sections that surround the stage). In a very short time, Bing Concert Hall has become a nexus of campus and community and is already transforming the practice, study and experience of live performance on the Stanford campus and beyond.</p>
<p>Stanford Live presents approximately 35 – 40 performances annually, and significant outreach to students on campus and in the communities beyond Stanford. Bing Concert Hall is also the home for certain performances of the Department of Music, which presents approximately 20 performances per year.</p>
<p>The Director of Music Programs, Education and Engagement will be part of a senior management team of six, including the Executive Director, Development, Marketing, Finance, and Operations and Production. The Director must balance the needs of many campus and off-campus constituents, including visiting artists, Stanford students, faculty, major supporters of Stanford Live as well as the several audiences of Stanford Live and communities around Stanford.</p>
<p><strong>Position Summary:</strong><br />
Reporting to the Executive Director, who acts as the artistic director of Stanford Live, the Director of Music Programs, Education and Engagement is responsible for recommending the selection of a wide range music programs for Bing Concert Hall and Frost Amphitheater from the full range of styles and periods (classical, jazz, world, popular, folk and roots, and contemporary) and planning, budgeting and overseeing the execution of all music, dance, theater, education and engagement programs presented by Stanford Live. Presently these are scheduled from September – June.</p>
<p><strong>Duties and Responsibilities:</strong><br />
Oversee all aspects of musical and education program functions (creative, financial, logistical and administrative), including:</p>
<p>30% Recommend a season of musical concerts for consideration by the Executive Director by:<br />
a. Working closely with Stanford Live’s resident musical advisor, who will be appointed on a one- or two-year basis.<br />
b. Determining the availability of specific artists to be a part of Stanford Live’s annual presentations by initiating and maintaining ongoing contact with artist representatives.<br />
c. Experiencing the work of a wide range of musical artists.<br />
d. Researching artists whose work may be of interest to Stanford Live and, in particular, to Stanford students.</p>
<p>20% Working closely with the General Manager, ensure that Stanford Live’s music, dance, theater and education programs are presented in a professional manner that falls within the budget parameters determined by the Executive Director. This will include: setting the general terms of artist engagements within specified budget parameters; ensuring that deal memos with artist fees approved by the Executivge Director for those are written, submitted to representatives and signed; ensuring that artists or their representatives have signed and returned all necessary governmental forms for identification or tax withholding; building and proposing financial projections (revenue and expense) for the program activity by no later than March 1, in collaboration with Director of Operations and Production, Production Manager, Marketing Director, Manager of Education and Engagement and Artist Services assistant for approval by General Manager and Executive Director; and managing and updating the programs spreadsheet; ensuring that fully-executed contracts are negotiated and signed on a timely basis.</p>
<p>15% Work collaboratively with the faculty of the Department of Music to conceive, create and execute joint projects that are of educational value to Stanford’s students.</p>
<p>10% Work closely with the Executive Director to ensure that the musical offerings of Stanford Live are on the highest level of excellence, that they are balanced among the various styles and periods, and that they represent a wide range of cultures and aesthetic and social points-of-view.</p>
<p>10% Oversee and actively integrate campus and community music programs and planning, supervising the Manager of Education and Engagement who manages both campus and community engagement in music, dance and theater programs, including the management of the multi-year Mellon Foundation grant, and a K – 12 public school program.</p>
<p>5% Ensure that all artists are paid on time, as per the individual agreements.</p>
<p>5% Attend all concerts and education activities presented by Stanford Live.</p>
<p>5% Organize panels and talks that precede or follow concerts.</p>
<p><strong>Qualifications:</strong><br />
3 – 5 years experience as a programmer of music in a medium-size, not-for-profit presenting organization.</p>
<p>Demonstrated deep and broad knowledge of a wide range of styles and periods of music, including classical, jazz, world, folk, roots and popular.</p>
<p>Excellent working relationships with a wide range of agents and music programmers throughout the United States and beyond.</p>
<p>Familiarity with and understanding of the basic terms of artist employment contracts.</p>
<p>Experience managing the professional presentation of live concerts in complex professional venues.</p>
<p>Experience working with faculty and students in higher education. Experience working in a university setting is highly desirable.</p>
<p>Experience developing campus and community engagement programs and events.</p>
<p>Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.</p>
<p>Proven ability to work patiently, persuasively and effectively with a wide variety of people, including students, faculty, staff, donors and the community.</p>
<p>Excellent computer skills; proficiency in using advanced functions of word processing, databases, Excel spreadsheets, web resources.</p>
