General Responsibilities

The Gallery director is responsible for day-to-day management of gallery operations. The Gallery director will work directly with the owner to coordinate with artists, collectors, and the public to plan and manage a program of exhibitions that is consistent with the mission of the gallery. The ideal candidate will have a knowledge of Texas art history as well as current trends in Texas art. The Gallery director is responsible for the marketing of the gallery, and will write press releases, develop exhibition catalogues, manage the gallery website, design print mailers, and develop an e-mail campaign for each exhibition. Along with the Gallery registrar, the director will manage gallery inventory, both owned and consigned, and will oversee transportation of incoming and outgoing inventory. They will work with the owner and Sales director to maintain relationships with collectors, handling the placement and sale of artworks with private and corporate clients as well as museum collections. They will work with the owner to plan public and private events that align with the gallery mission.

Specific Duties

1. Presentation/Sales
a. Work with owner on exhibition planning and layout.
b. Oversee hanging and installation of all gallery exhibitions. Install offsite exhibitions as directed by the owner.
c. Work with owner to design and develop appropriate invitations in support of all exhibitions and events.
d. Work with owner to design and develop exhibition catalogs in support of all exhibitions and post to website in a timely manner.
e. Work to achieve highest sales amount, strategically marketing with sales director and owner.
f. Coordinate with owner, and sales director to follow up with thank you notes and insurance values for clients on sales.
g. Respond to phone and email sales inquiries.
h. Keep owner and sales director apprised of all active sales prospects and inventory presentations, and report on these at scheduled staff meetings.

2. Advertising/Promotion
a. Work with owner to develop and maintain a gallery “ad calendar.”
b. Work with Owner to develop strategic marketing plan and write ad text.
c. Schedule, create and send gallery emails.

3. Electronic Support
a. Create and send electronic catalogues for upcoming exhibitions to potential clients.
b. Prepare and send sales presentations to clients.
c. Monitor sales inquiries from AskArt, Artsy, and Fine Art Estates.
d. Manage and maintain all components of the gallery website.
e. Maintain gallery client list.
f. Manage Social media accounts: Pinterest / Instagram/ Facebook/ Twitter

4. Client/Artist Development
a. Work with registrar and sales director to maintain a complete and accurate client contact list (mail/email) which includes the type of art and/or artists which new clients are seeking.
b. Review and maintain artist bios on web-site; coordinate with registrar to update bios and regularly promote their professional accomplishments such as exhibitions, commissions, etc.

5. Facility Management
a. Oversee registrar to ensure overall gallery interior cleanliness and tidiness.
b. Assist Owner and registrar with event planning and reception details.

6. Selection/Intake of artwork
a. Work with owner to actively seek out new consignments and negotiate consignment terms with artists and consignors.
b. Work with registrar to coordinate transportation/shipping of artwork. Must be able to drive a cargo van and pickup/deliver if needed.
c. Work with owner and registrar to make sure all correct consignment paperwork is received upon arrival of artwork.
d. Assist owner in monitoring overall gallery insurance value for policy coverage on artwork on and off site.
e. Review all incoming consignments for accuracy.

7. Delivery/Return
a. Oversee registrar in coordinating and handling of all return and delivery projects.
b. Travel, if needed, to transport works to artists or clients.

8. Inventory/Preparation/Storage
a. Work with Registrar to monitor storage areas and offsite storage.
b. Oversee and approve the Registrar in completing a Conservation Estimate/Delivery Form and deliver works to conservator.
c. For works needing framing, work with owner and registrar to select framing options for all works requiring framing.
d. Oversee the Registrar in completing Framing Request and Delivery Form for all materials to be framed.
e. For all artist-consigned material, work with registrar to develop and send Artist inventory/sales reports and arrange for necessary return and exchange of inventory.

Qualifications

1.Bachelor’s Degree in Art History, Arts Management, or related field. Graduate degree preferred, with prior experience working in an art gallery necessary.
3. Effective written and verbal communication skills necessary.
2. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to multitask while working in a busy environment.
4. Demonstrated commitment to building artist and client relations.
5. Strong management skills in a small office environment.
7. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), and experience with art gallery databases such as ArtCloud, Artwork manager, etc.
8. Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, occasional travel.
