St. Mark’s School of Texas is seeking a creative and talented Middle and Upper School art teacher who specializes in woodwork and metalwork. The position will begin in August of the 2022-23 school year. Strong candidates will possess a talent for teaching 3-D design and sculpture and have advanced experience with woodworking tools and metalworking equipment. The most competitive candidates will have a strong understanding of the visual language of three-dimensional forms and the elements of principles of design. Candidates should be skilled at project planning, sketching, and the fabrication of wood and metal sculpture, as well as convey a passion for teaching the historical and contemporary figures and themes that inform student’s work.

Beyond the classroom, faculty at St. Mark’s participate in a variety of activities with students that include serving as an Advisor to a small group of students, coaching a sport, sponsoring a club, or participating in the Wilderness Program. Successful candidates will have experiences and interests that allow them to contribute in those areas of school life, as well. Finally, St. Mark’s School of Texas is committed to character and leadership education, and prospective faculty members should have a desire to help develop these qualities in young men alongside the delivery of art content.

Responsibilities
• Plan and teach Middle School and Upper School Wood and Metal classes
• Develop and execute innovative approaches to visual arts and sculpture
• Maintain the Wood and Metal Studio and equipment, including the oversight of safety protocols for the space
• Foster innovative thinking and creative problem-solving in collaboration with other fine arts colleagues and programs
• Curate exhibitions for students on and off campus
• Assist with the design and installation of public art sculpture
• Evaluate student progress and use the provided assessment tools for grading
• Provide timely communication with students and parents about in class performance
• Offer studio time after school for students to work safely on projects
• Serve as an advisor to a small group of students
• Participating in the character and leadership education program
• Participate in additional school programs such as camping, student clubs, etc.

Experience / Qualifications and Skills
• A bachelor’s degree is required, a master’s degree is preferred
• Five or more years teaching experience at the high school level preferred; independent school experience is a plus
• Professional artistic experience is preferred, including continued work as an artist for personal gratification or for exhibition purposes
• Passion for visual art, art history, and the fine arts
• Experience that contributes to other programs such as coaching or outdoor education
• Knowledge of varied teaching strategies to differentiate learning
