Under the direction of the Director of Institutional Giving, the Manager of Foundations and Grants serves as a key member of the development team, improving and executing strategies regarding foundation and government funders in support of the annual fund and special project funding. The Manager is to meet or exceed foundation and government grant goals by renewing, identifying, rating, cultivating, soliciting and securing supporters. This individual must manage a portfolio that includes researching and writing formal grant applications. The Manager must be an independent, fast-paced self-starter with exceptional communication and written skills and a proven track-record for securing and increasing foundation and government support.

JOB DUTIES:
• Serve as the lead relationship manager for foundation and government donors.
• Meet aggressive foundation and government giving goals by actively cultivating new and existing relationships with key stakeholders at foundations, city officials and agencies.
• Assist with the creation and implementation of the overall strategic direction to identify and solicit sources of private and public institutional support.
• Broaden prospect pool through relationship management and directing research.
• Ensure the timely completion of all foundation and government grant proposals, applications, required reporting and stewardship activities.
• Ensure the proper acknowledgement of all foundation supporters through deliverables as agreed upon in proposals.
• Steward existing donors including one-on-one meetings, invitations to events, participation in events and thoughtful cultivation with the goal to open new opportunities for funding and to deepen existing relationships.
• Manage all deadlines for submission and reporting within portfolio through Tessitura database with plan steps, status updates, contact information updates, prospect research, and reports.
• Utilize the Board of Directors, Executive Leadership and other members of the Development team and senior management in the work of institutional giving.
• Lead the fundraising efforts to secure foundation support for special projects including but not limited to the Alley 4.0 Vision for Future Capital Campaign.
• Work in close collaboration with the Development Communications Manager to develop proposal strategies and oversee the gathering of necessary information to execute and submit proposals in a timely manner.
• Work in close collaboration with the Institutional Giving Associate to develop proposal collateral materials and submission of proposals.
• Lead the strategic oversight of the annual foundation stewardship event.
• Attend events throughout the season encouraging the development of relationships with the Alley’s institutional donors.
• Serve as a Development representative at Alley performances as needed (i.e. Greenroom).

REQUIREMENTS:
• Four year college degree, master’s degree and/or CFRE a plus.
• Minimum five years of experience in non-profit management/development/grant writing experience or a related field.
• Knowledge of the Houston institutional funding community is necessary.
• Previous experience working with volunteer boards and committees.
• Excellent communication skills with demonstrated ability to prepare and present both formal written and oral presentations.
• Requires strong collaboration skills in order to work effectively across the organization and function consistently as a highly valued and high performing team player within the Development department and the organization.
• Ability to exercise good judgment, take initiative and make recommendations in resolving problems and providing guidance to employee(s) or other staff.
• Must be able to think critically and strategically and anticipate potential project challenges.
• Extensive computer and database knowledge necessary (Word, Excel, Tessitura).
• A demonstrated record of ability to multi-task and meet deadlines under pressure; completing assignments on time and on budget.
• Broad knowledge of the principles of fundraising.
• Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills.
• High attention to detail and accuracy.
• Strong problem solving, research, analytical, organizational and strategic planning skills.
• Flexibility to work events that occur on the evenings and weekends.
• Self-motivated & self-starting.
• Ability to represent the Alley Theatre in an appropriate manner.
