Organization The Carving Studio & Sculpture Center
Closing Date Friday, April 7, 2017
Location West Rutland, Vermont
Information

The Carving Studio and Sculpture Center invites artists to submit proposals for SculptFest 2017, September 10 – October 23. The theme for this year’s outdoor exhibition is “The State of Hope” guest curated by artist Whitney Ramage. Ms. Ramage is a Pratt Institute graduate who lives and works in New York City.

In recent history hope has been the apex political rhetoric. What does it mean to us now? How can we resist mounting despair? Hope in dark times is more vital than hope in times of prosperity. Without it there can be no action. In times like these, artists have a responsibility to push forward.

By examining hope from all possible angles we will seek to gain forward momentum. One of art’s fundamental purposes is to reorient us in relation to the world, to each other and to ourselves. It is a method re-thinking the status quo. It is a research practice based on exploration and an opportunity to illuminate aspects of our society and by so doing alter our collective experience. Perhaps it can teach us new ways to hope. Now more than ever rethinking is key to our collective survival. Now more than ever we need artists to reorient us to our humanity.

Artists and artist teams are invited to submit proposals for sculpture, installation, video or performance to be exhibited on the historic grounds of the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center in West Rutland, Vermont. Artists are encouraged to visit the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center website for more information about the history of the grounds as a former marble quarry, www.carvingstudio.org.
