Hot Iron Applications Due: March 20, 2020 (11:59pm CST)

Each year, Franconia Sculpture Park invites artists from around the world to participate in the Hot Iron Artist Residency Program. Since 1996, over 209 artists have had the opportunity to strengthen their portfolio and metal casting skills, as well as the opportunity for professional networking in a unique community. There are a number of different roles artists can apply for, depending on their qualifications and experience. Each selected artist is invited to create a new work of art by the end of the residency.

The Franconia Hot Iron residency is a fantastic opportunity for artists (sculptors, glass sculptors, jewelry and metal smiths, ceramists, etc) that have the desire to work outside the boundaries of your typical studio practice in a supportive and inclusive environment. Most artists that work in three dimensions have the cross applicable skill set to make a multi-part sand mold for cast iron— glass sculptors and ceramists make multi-part molds for slip and slump casting, jewelry and metal smiths have an intimate understanding of metal casting.

Iron is for Every Body! Cast iron doesn’t need to be the sum totality of your studio practice, artists that work in a variety of mediums are encouraged to apply.

In addition to the Artist Residency, the Hot Iron season doubles as a community education program. For the first three weeks of the season, the Hot Iron Artist Interns will lead tours of the Cast Iron Exhibition and teach family-oriented relief mold-making workshops.

The season concludes with two public iron pours: The Annual Hot Iron Pour, the Midwest’s largest hot metal pour event; and Franconia’s Artist Pour, in which resident artists will complete their own works which will have the opportunity to be juried into the annual Cast Iron Exhibition.
