State Artist Marc Burckhardt

Marc Burckhardt is the 2010 Texas State Visual Artist in 2-D work. Born in Germany and raised in Texas, Marc Burckhardt’s work juxtaposes old world styles and symbols with contemporary American themes. As a youth, he spent summers in Europe with his family, a tradition he continues today. The paintings, architecture, and perspectives he encounters there combine with his studies of art history to inform his work, which utilizes old masters’ techniques to achieve the texture and luminosity that distinguish his paintings. Marc lives and works in a 1910 farmhouse in the shadow of downtown Austin Texas.
