Description
Dr. Carmen Tafolla, 2015 Texas Poet Laureate, is known internationally for her moving performances and powerful poetry readings. A poet, children’s writer, performance artist, storyteller, motivational speaker, and Professor Emeritus at UTSA, Tafolla has performed her one-woman show, With Our Very Own Names, to more than a thousand audiences, with standing ovations in 12 countries. Dr. Tafolla offers performances, keynotes, readings, and workshops in English and Spanish to all age groups. The author of more than 40 books, her work appears internationally in five languages, in journals, magazines, anthologies, newspapers, college textbooks and elementary school readers, and she has won numerous awards including the Americas Award, the Charlotte Zolotow for best children’s picture book writing, the Art of Peace Award, for works which promote peace and social justice, three A.L.A. Notable Books, three Tomas Rivera Book Awards, six International Latino Book Awards, and the Fred Rogers Corporation’s 2010 Best Books for Babies. In 2023, Penguin released her 40th book, Warrior Girl, to wide acclaim. The National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies has honored her for work which ‘gives voice to the peoples and cultures of this land.’
