Azul Barrientos is an acclaimed musician dedicated to uncovering and conserving the cultural influences and interconnections between Latin America, Africa, Europe, and Mexico. Born in Mexico City, Azul moved to San Antonio, Texas as a young woman, where she developed a reputation for building bridges between Mexicana and Chicana cultures. Her career has focused on the preservation of traditional songs from Latin America and the exploration of their diverse musical histories. Azul rejoices in her Latina roots, giving new life to the rhythms and stories of previous generations. She currently serves as Artist in Residence at the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center in San Antonio, Texas. Available programs include solo concerts and performances with accompaniment. Azul performs with guitar and jarana at all concerts. Accompaniment may include piano and bass for a jazz-style concert; harp, cello, and percussion; or other variations including full band and duets. Children’s performances featuring traditional songs, games, dancing, and storytelling are also available. Multimedia presentations providing context on cultural themes may also be incorporated by request. Photo by Josh Huskin.
