Indrajit Banerjee is an Austin-based sitar virtuoso and one of the foremost interpreters of North Indian classical music in the United States. A disciple of Pandit Kartick Kumar, he represents the revered Maihar Gharana with a style that blends tradition, imagination, and rhythmic vitality. His international career includes performances across India, Europe, and the United States, with appearances at major festivals such as SXSW, Levitation, the Joshua Tree Music Festival, and the Marquette Waterfront Festival. Banerjee has collaborated with acclaimed artists including guitarist Fareed Haque, saxophonist Jeff Coffin, members of the band Lettuce, and tabla maestros Anindo Chatterjee and Subrata Bhattacharya. He also leads his own fusion ensemble, Sitar-Ji, creating bridges between classical and contemporary soundscapes. In Austin, he directs the Antara School of Indian Classical Music, nurturing the next generation of musicians. As a Texas Touring Roster artist, Banerjee offers solo sitar recitals, sitar and tabla duets, and lecture-demonstrations that illuminate the structure and spirit of the raga tradition, enriching communities across Texas through authentic performances that connect audiences to the depth and beauty of Indian classical music.
