Description

Marlon Simon is a jazz drummer, composer and educator originally from Venezuela who came to the US in 1987 to study jazz music. After performing and recording with major Latin and jazz artists, Marlon founded the Nagual Spirits. With his band, Marlon was able to present his unique approach as a performer on the drum set and his talent to compose Latin jazz music and further explore other boundaries. The Nagual Spirits have been among the main Latin jazz exponents for the past thirty years. They have produced six internationally-acclaimed albums and have toured nationally and internationally, performing in various jazz festivals. Marlon Simon is the recipient of numerous awards in performance and education including the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in music composition (2022), a Chamber Music America New Jazz Works grant, the French American Cultural Exchange, and the South Arts Jazz Road grant. The band has been selected in the past to present international concerts representing the excellence and integrity of the musical art forms born in the US, in this case Latin jazz, a program supported by the US Department of State and the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation.
