Description

Silambam Houston uses the rich vocabulary of Indian classical arts, with their intricate footwork, sculpturesque poses, captivating facial and body language, and breathtaking costume forms, to reach new, diverse audiences. Under the artistic direction of Lavanya Rajagopalan, whose ‘choreographic style… is highlighted by beautiful ensemble work and an eye for rich composition,’ Silambam Houston has created a spectrum of artistic works that delights and intrigues audiences of all walks and ages. Programs offered: Repertoire performances can be tailored to any length and theme, and include repertoire pieces in the Indian classical dance forms of Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, and Odissi. Evening-length original productions are listed at https://www.silambamhouston.org/dance-company, range from 1-2 hours, and can be condensed or excerpted. Outreach programs for K-12 graders and community settings include interactive performances such as Dance Across India (a journey through the customs and cultures of different parts of India), Kavya: Poetry in Motion (an exploration of poetry), Dancing Into STEM (an exploration of STEM concepts) and Storytime With Silambam (stories from Indian mythology and folk culture). We also offer a workshop/residency, Exploring Indian Classical Dance, in which students learn and experience Indian art forms. These programs are available both directly and through Young Audiences of Houston. Photo by Amitava Sarkar.
