Description
Sofrito y Su Melao is a live Cuban, Caribbean, and Latin band, part of the 501(c)(3) All Rhythms which has provided live performances, interactive workshops, and enrichment programs to underserved populations since 2012. Sofrito specializes in music from Cuba and the Caribbean such as son, salsa, guajira, chachacha, cumbia, merengue, pilon, rumba, bolero, and more! Having performed at Austin’s emblematic venues such as Central Market, Radio Coffee, One-2-One Bar, and more, Sofrito y Su Melao also frequently performs for Title I schools, YMCAs, and Austin Parks and Recreation centers. The band is unique by offering interactive performance-workshops that integrate Cuban and Caribbean music with cultural and historical understanding, bilingual literacy-based learning, dancing, and the chance for volunteers to play alongside the band. Latin GRAMMY Award-nominated musical director Ian Fry brings his experience with Tejano legend Tony ‘Ham’ Guerrero, as well as his numerous travels to Santiago de Cuba, to his band of Austin’s virtuosic Latin-jazz musicians. Sofrito has also integrated their engaging performances with readings of Cuban folktales as well as their own proprietary story based in Eastern Cuba. Preferred instrumentation is a nontet, but they are just as powerful as a septet, or quartet in the Cuban trovador style. Photo by Zebadiah Badgett – ZB Imagery.
