Description
Mary McCleary makes collages of great complexity that combine painterly craftsmanship and striking iconography. Her subject matter comes from religion, science, history, and literature. McCleary has participated in over 350 one-person and group exhibits in museums and galleries in 29 states, Mexico, Canada, and Russia. These venues include the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Museum of Biblical Art, Boston Museum of Art, Dallas Museum of Art, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, and Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. McCleary’s works are in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art; El Paso Museum of Art; San Antonio Museum of Art; Art Museum of South Texas; and Art Museum of Southeast Texas. She is Regents Professor of Art Emeritus at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, where she taught from 1975 to 2005. In 2011, she was named Texas Artist of the Year by Art League Houston.
