Texas State Artist
Nominate the next Texas Poet Laureates, Texas State Musicians, and Texas State Artists (visual arts) by October 15! TCA organizes this biennial designation process, which is the highest honor the State gives to artists.

New Grants Approved
On September 3, TCA Commissioners approved funding of 1,143 grants in the first funding round for fiscal year 2027. The grants total over $17 million and will go to nonprofits and units of government in 131 Texas cities. The full list of fiscal year 2027 grants is here.

New Cultural Districts Approved
On September 3, TCA Commissioners also approved the designation of four new cultural districts: the Edinburg Arts District, Galveston African American Cultural Heritage District, Lufkin Cultural District, and Mitte Cultural District in Brownsville. Congratulations!

Art Opportunities
Texas students in grades K-12 are invited to participate in the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality’s Take Care of Texas Student Art Contest. Entries are accepted from October 5, 2026 to December 18, 2026.
To enter, students must submit original artwork portraying ways to reduce waste. Winners and runners-up in each category will win cash prizes, and students in grades 11–12 are eligible for up to $2,000 in scholarships!
Artwork Requirements:
- Artwork must depict ways Texans can reduce waste.
- Artwork must include the phrase "Take Care of Texas" spelled correctly.
- Artwork must be submitted on an 8.5" x 11" piece of paper (landscape format is recommended).

For artists, writers, poets and musicians, any creative who needs some quiet and peace to enhance your creative process on our 21-acre property about five miles outside the town of Dripping Springs, in the Texas Hill Country.
We are offering one-week to one-month, self-guided retreats for a modest retreat fee of $1200/week. Interested in work trade for a discounted stay?
